Common Examples of Telegram Fraud or Scams
Potential Telegram scams can manifest in various ways. Typically, they’ll aim to exploit your trust and the anonymity of Telegram. Here are potential Telegram fraud scams:
Phishing Schemes: Scammers create fake accounts or groups imitating legitimate organisations. They send messages urging you to provide personal information or login details, intending to steal your identity or access your accounts.
Investment Scams: Fraudsters entice you with promises of high returns on investments. These schemes often present themselves as exclusive opportunities or insider information, but they typically lead to financial losses rather than profits.
Lottery Scams: You may receive messages claiming that you’ve won a lottery or prize. To claim it, you’re directed to provide sensitive information or pay a fee, which results in losing money without receiving anything in return.
Fake Charity Requests: Scammers exploit your goodwill by posing as charity organisations seeking donations for various causes. Sometimes these are celebrity scams, supposedly endorsed by singers and actors.
Of course, Telegram isn’t the only social media platform where scammers do their work. For example, we also have guides about Pinterest scams, Snapchat scams and others besides.

Case Study: Victim Loses Money To Celebrity Scam
Case Study: Victim Loses Money To Celebrity Scam
A BBC News report shows how some scammers start fraudulent activities on one platform and then move to another. In this case, a woman was supposedly contacted by singer Rag’n’Bone Man on Instagram.
The scammer used a fake account to reach out to the victim after they’d posted a comment on the real singer’s Insta account. However, after contacting her, the criminal asked the woman to carry on chatting via the Telegram messenger app.
The victim was drawn into the chat and was asked to pay £250 to see Rag’n’Bone Man perform in the studio. Despite her concerns, she proceeded to pay, and their conversations continued. Eventually, she was contacted by his “management company” who told her that she actually needed to pay £1,500 to meet “her idol”. After much pressure from the fake singer, the victim paid the cash. Further requests for more money were made, but the woman had, by this time, realised she’d been duped. However, by this point, she’d already lost nearly £2,500.
It is unclear from the BBC report whether she got her money back.
How Can I Tell If A Telegram Scam Has Occurred?
There is no exact science that will tell you if the person on the other end of a Telegram chat is a scammer. However, some warning signs that everything isn’t right include:
Unsolicited communications: Exercise vigilance when receiving messages from unknown individuals or accounts claiming affiliation with reputable organisations or familiar entities. Fraudsters frequently fabricate identities to establish a façade of credibility.
Demands for sensitive information: Requests for confidential details such as passwords or financial data via Telegram should be treated with suspicion. Authentic organisations typically do not solicit such information through messaging platforms.
Unrealistic promises or offers: Be wary of messages promoting exorbitant investments or extraordinary prizes. Claims of guaranteed high returns are a hallmark of fraudulent schemes prevalent on Telegram.
Pressure through urgency: Scammers often employ urgency to compel hasty decisions. If you feel pressured to act swiftly, pause and thoroughly authenticate the communication source prior to taking any action.
Errors in grammar and spelling: Fraudulent messages frequently exhibit poor language quality, as they are typically produced by individuals with limited proficiency in English. Such discrepancies may serve as a warning sign of a potential scam.
If you suspect you experienced a Telegram scam, document every detail. Keep records of conversations and any transactions. Reporting the scam to Telegram can help prevent further incidents.
If I Have Been Scammed On Telegram, Can I Get A Refund?
Victims of some scams can now expect refunds from their bank because of new rules from the Payment System Regulator (PSR). As such, if you’ve lost money to a Telegram scam, a refund might be awarded if:
A scammer tricked you into making a payment from a Telegram chat.
You tried to validate the scammer’s identity or the purpose of the payment.
Once the scam had been realised, you made contact with your bank.
However, despite the PSR’s rules, a scam refund could be rejected by your bank. This might happen if they believe that you handed over your money too easily or didn’t react to fraud warnings during the transfer.
