Viber Scam Fraud

Advice on how to spot potential Viber scams or fraud. Also, advice on obtaining refunds if you've lost money to a scammer.

Viber has transformed the way we communicate, offering instant messaging and calling at our fingertips. However, this convenience may also attract scammers looking to exploit unsuspecting users. Therefore, we’ve written this guide about how to spot Viber scams, and how to recoup your losses if you’re a victim of bank fraud.

Generally, Viber scams can take many forms, from fake job scams to phishing attempts that aim to steal your personal information. These types of fraud are often referred to as authorised push payments or APP scams. In the UK, new bank rules mean victims of APP scams should be refunded by their banks.

However, from experience, we know that this doesn’t always happen. Therefore, if you’ve fallen victim to a Viber scam and your bank won’t refund your money, you may want to contact our fraud recovery specialists.

What Are Viber Scams

Viber scams involve deceptive practices that try to exploit the messaging platform’s user base. Scammers employ various tactics to defraud individuals, including fake job offers, lottery notifications, and even romance scams. These scams often appear legitimate, making it difficult for users to identify fraudulent activities.

Recognising the signs of Viber scams is crucial. You should always be wary of unsolicited messages, offers that seem too good to be true, and requests for personal data. If you suspect you’ve fallen victim to a Viber scam, the first thing to do is report the fraud to your bank. Taking this step alone could make you eligible for a full refund of your money.

However, if your bank won’t issue a refund for a Viber scam, don’t give up hope just yet. Our team is here to support you, offer free legal advice and explain your next steps. In some cases, we could even enter into negotiations with your banking provider to try to secure a refund on your behalf.

What Types Of Viber Scams Are There?

Viber scams take various forms, each designed to exploit users for financial gain. Some examples include:

  1. Investment Scams: Investment scams promise high returns with little risk, often involving cryptocurrencies or foreign exchange trading. You may receive unsolicited investment opportunities through messages that appear credible.

  2. Fake Job Offers: Fake job offers typically entice you with lucrative positions that require upfront payments for training or supplies. These scams may ask for personal details under the guise of background checks.

  3. Lottery Scams: Lottery scams notify you of winning prizes you never entered. Scammers often request a fee to release these so-called winnings, preying on your excitement and willingness to engage.

  4. Online Dating Scams: Online dating scams involve scammers creating fake profiles to establish emotional connections. Once trust is built, they typically request financial assistance for personal emergencies or travel expenses.

It’s worth noting that Viber is not the only messenger service that fraudsters might try to use. For example, we’ve recently written guides on WhatsApp scams, and iMessage scams amongst many others.

I Got Scammed On Viber, What Should I Do?

Follow these steps to address the situation and improve your chances of recovering lost funds:

  • Document All Communications
Keep records of all messages, phone numbers, or emails used by the scammer. This information is crucial for reporting and pursuing a Viber scam claim.

  • Notify Viber Support
Report the fraudulent activity through Viber’s support channels. Use their resources to secure your account by changing your password and enabling two-step verification.

  • Contact Your Bank or Credit Card Provider
If financial information was shared or payments were made, notify your bank immediately. File a Viber scam refund request and dispute transactions within the allowed timeframe.

  • Report to Authorities
Inform Action Fraud (the Police reporting service for cybercrime). This helps raise awareness and supports broader investigations.

Taking the steps listed above could make it a lot easier to get a Viber fraud refund from your bank. If this is something you’re struggling to achieve, please don’t hesitate to get in touch to ask for our help.

How To Report Scams and Scammers To Viber

Viber users can report scams or scammers directly through the app’s support channels, ensuring swift action against fraudulent activities. To report a scam, users should navigate to the chat with the suspected scammer, tap on the contact’s information, and select the option to report or block the user. Additionally, Viber provides an online support page where users can submit detailed reports about the incident, including screenshots and other relevant information. By promptly reporting scams, users not only protect themselves but also help Viber maintain a safer platform for its community.

Case Study: Man Loses Life Savings In Fake Wedding Scam

A British man lost $250,000 to a fake wedding scam, according to a BBC News report. This was no ordinary scam, however. It took place over many months, and the victim met his “Bride-to-be” on multiple occasions in Ukraine.

While in Ukraine, the victim was never on his own with his love interest. Instead, another woman was there to act as a translator. When they were apart, Viber was used to communicate as it has a built-in translator function.

The victim sold his home and gave up his job, and decided to propose and move to live in Ukraine. Before he did, the scammer suggested that he transfer money to the translator’s company account, as it can be hard to get money into the country. The victim was wary but went ahead and transferred around £140,000. However, in the next part of the scam, the victim was told he had to marry the translator, otherwise the money would not be released by the bank.

He didn’t want to do this, but it was the only way to get the money to his lover. He was reassured that they could divorce quickly and then the “real marriage” could go ahead.

To cut this long story short, the victim finally paid out more than $250,000 for a flat, the wedding and associated bills. However, all were at much-inflated prices. The apartment that the victim “paid” $200,000 for was actually only worth $63,000.

This is an extreme example of how romance scams work and how easy it can be to lose large amounts of money.

What Warning Signs Could Indicate A Viber Scam

Recognising the warning signs of a Viber scam can help you avoid falling victim. Here are five key indicators to watch out for:

  • Unsolicited Messages: Receiving messages from unknown contacts, especially those offering prizes, discounts, or urgent requests, is a red flag.

  • Requests for Personal Information: Scammers often ask for sensitive details like passwords, bank account numbers, or verification codes.

  • Poor Grammar and Spelling: Messages with numerous errors or awkward phrasing may indicate a scam.

  • Links to Unfamiliar Websites: Be cautious of links directing you to unknown or suspicious websites, as they may lead to phishing attempts.

  • Pressure to Act Quickly: Scammers often create a sense of urgency, urging you to respond or take action immediately.

The key message here, probably, is if something seems to be too good to be true, it probably is. If you suspect a Viber scam is occurring, take a 5 minute break, think about what’s happening and speak to your bank before transferring any money.

If I've Been A Victim Of A Viber Scam, Can I Get A Refund?

Banking rules in the UK have recently changed to help protect victims of some fraud. Therefore, if you’ve lost money in a Viber scam, a refund might be possible if:

  • You were tricked into sending money from your account to a fraudster; and

  • You made checks during the transfer to try and ensure it was legitimate; and

  • As soon as you found out you’d been scammed, you told your bank about the incident.

However, your bank may not refund you in some circumstances. For example, it could argue that your lack of diligence allowed the scammer to get your money too easily.

What If My Bank Won't Refund Me?

Although it can be worrying to be told that you won’t be getting a scam refund, you should stay strong to try and resolve the issue.

If your Viber refund has been turned down, you could:

  • Contact your bank and request a formal explanation of its decision in writing.

  • Ask the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) if they agree with the bank.

  • Contact us for free advice if you’re not happy with the FOS’s decision.

Our experts deal with scam refund claims all the time. Their aim is to spot errors in banking decisions and to get them overturned for any case they agree to work on.
