Generally, the scam occurs when interested parties are contacted by private message. The scammer lures the victim by offering free crypto and cites various reasons for doing so. Essentially, the message makes the victim believe that they have been randomly chosen.
There is a link within the message along with the code needed to accept the “generous” offer. This link opens a credible-looking cryptocurrency exchange on which the victim needs to register.
At this point, the new user needs to make a small crypto deposit or send photographs of their passport, driving license or other ID to validate them. Finally, the free cryptocurrency appears in the new user’s account.
However, if they try to move it to their own wallet, they are asked to pay a fee to release their funds. This fee, of course, is never retrievable according to Kaspersky and the scammers are probably nowhere to be seen.
